Child's Attempt To Enlist

Newton and Earlestown Guardian
June 16th 1916

Stanley George Lawrence of Peterborough, aged five years, presented himself for enlistment at the recruiting office. An Army form was given to him with the following words on the back: “This is to certify that Stanley George Lawrence, aged five, offered himself for enlistment at Peterborough because the Germans had killed his uncle, but was unable to fulfil the necessary physical conditions.” He was also given the usual shilling.
