In Memory of

Private John Thomas Jourdan

61358
12th (Duke of Lancaster's Own Yeomanry) Battalion Manchester Regiment
Killed in Action 20th September 1918 Age 22

The Newton and Earlestown War memorial lists J.T. Jordan and J.T. Jourdan. While the NEG's obituary on 11th October 1918 discusses John Thomas Jordan, CWGC has Jourdan and it is believed that this is the correct spelling.

Private Jourdan was the son of Michael J. and Mary Ellen Jourdan of 2, Cherry Street, Newton Common, Earlestown. As a boy he attended St. Mary's R.C. School and then worked at Bold Colliery. He joined the army at Easter 1915.

The NEG obituary reported that "he was killed in action on September 20th. It appears that Private E. Singleton, who resides in Crow Lane West, was on the field of battle at the time, and verifies the statement. It was during the British attack on Cambrai, when the losses were very heavy." (Many sources give the dates for the Second Battle of Cambrai as 27th September 1918 to 9th October 1918. However, there were many attacks in this area at this time.)

Private Jourdan's name is on the Vis-en-Artois Memorial which bears the names of over 9,000 men who fell in the period from 8 August 1918 to the date of the Armistice in the Advance to Victory in Picardy and Artois, between the Somme and Loos, and who have no known grave.
