Oliver was the son of the late William and Agnes Hingley. Previous
to the outbreak of war, he worked as a collier for Messrs. Richard Evans and
Co., Ltd. at Wood Pit, Haydock. The WG of 15th April 1916 gives his address
at that time as Millfield Lane, Haydock, while the NEG of the previous day
gives it as Kenyon’s Lane, Haydock. His sister, Mrs. W. Bailey, to whom
the news was set lived at the BYH House, Golborne Road, Newton.
According to the obituaries, he was killed whilst taking part in a bayonet
charge. The Official History describes the
fighting for the Bluff during which Oliver was killed.
His name is recorded on the Ypres (Menin
Gate) Memorial, along with more than 54,000 officers and men who died
in the Ypres Salient before 16th August 1917 and who have no known grave.
