According to CWGC, John was the son of Richard and Mary Ellen Hill of 31, Moorfield Houses, Crooke, Wigan. However, the brief obituary in the Newton and Earlestown Guardian of June 23rd 1916 said that John "up to the time of their removal to Crook, Wigan, was resident with his parents on Common Road, Earlestown." He was an old scholar at the Brunswick Road Town Mission Hall, and was also a member of the local branch of Rechabites.
John was drowned when the Hampshire struck a mine and sank, claiming many lives including that of Lord Kitchener. John is commemorated at the Porstsmouth Naval Memorial.
