In Memory of

Serjeant Harry Sydney Guthrie MM

26327
17th Battalion Manchester Regiment
Died 11th October 1916 Age 27

According to SDGW, Sergeant Guthrie was born in Newton-le-Willows, but enlisted in Manchester, where he lived, according to CWGC, with his wife Florence Guthrie at 56, Cecil Street, Whitworth Park, Manchester.

It has not been possible to find an obituary for other personal details, or for information about the awarding of the Military Medal. His medal index card does not seem to mention a military medal.

Sergeant Guthrie is buried in the A.I.F. Burial Ground, Flers, Somme. This cemeterywas begun by Australian medical units, but was very greatly enlarged after the Armistice by the concentration of British and French graves from the battlefields of the Somme. There are now 3473 1914-18 war Commonwealth casualties commemorated on this site, of which about two thirds are unidentified.
