In Memory of

4th Engineer Officer Frank Ewart Griffiths

S.S. "City of Lincoln" (Liverpool), Mercantile Marine
Died 18th September 1917 Age 24

Engineer Frank Griffiths was the son of William Henry and Sabina Jessie Griffiths of 79, Market Street, Earlestown.

It has not been possible to find an obituary, but an In Memoriam in the Newton and Earlestown Guardian on September 20th 1918 explained that he had been killed by an enemy torpedo. As well as his mother and family, the In Memoriam mentions a Miss Cain, though it is speculation whether this was a girlfriend or fiance.

Frank's name is on the Tower Hill Memorial in London. The 1914-18 Memorial is dedicated to "the honour of twelve thousand of the Merchant Navy and Fishing Fleets who have no grave but the sea."
