In Memory of

Private Fred Finall

14109
10th Battalion The Loyal North Lancashire Regiment
Died of Wounds 15th August 1916 Age 26

Private Fred Finall was the son of James and Sarah E. Finall of 163, Crow Lane West, Earlestown. SDGW says he was born in Walkden, Lancashire, enlisted in Liverpool but lived in Earlestown. Neither SDGW nor CWGC refer to the 'W' on the Town Hall Memorial. St Peter's Memorial does not have a 'W' either.

According to the obituary published in the Newton and Earlestown Guardian on 25th August 1916, he joined up in the first weeks of the War. He was admitted to hospital on the 13th August "very seriously wounded in both legs and suffering from shock". He died two days later. This was during the Battle of the Somme.

Fred is buried in Heilly Station Cemetery, Mericourt-l'Abbe, Somme in Plot III Row C Grave 10.
