In Memory of

Sergeant Herbert Eaves

300445
18th Battalion King's (Liverpool Regiment)
Killed in Action 29th April 1918 Age 23

Sergeant Herbert Eaves was born in Wargrave and lived with his parents at 59, Fairclough Street, Earlestown. He was an old scholar of the Wesleyan Day School and later was a regular attender at Wargrave Church where, according to the obituary published in the NEG on 10th May 1918, he was "always interested in Church affairs". Before joining up, he was employed at the Viaduct.

According to the NEG, he was shot through the head by a sniper. This suggests that he was in the trenches, or on guard, where his body could easily be recovered. However, his name is recorded on the Tyne Cot Memorial along with others whose have no known grave.
