In Memory of

Sergeant Thomas Dwyer

2117
1st/4th Battalion South Lancashire Regiment
Killed in Action 12th August 1916 Age 27

Sergeant Thomas Dwyer was one of four brothers who served the colours during the Great War. Their parents lived at 7, Atholl Street, Newton Common, Earlestown. Thomas's brother, William, was missing at the time of his death.

He had been a labourer at the Viaduct and Vulcan Foundries, but, when he enlisted in August 1914 at the outbreak of war, he was working as an insurance agent with the London and Manchester Society. He was a violin player "of some merit" and his friends had sent him an instrument about a month or so before his death.

He was wounded by shrapnel in the scalp, according to the WG of 8th January 1916. He was killed on the night of August 11th 1916 during the Battles of the Somme. The NEG of 3rd November 1916 states that Thomas was awarded the Military Medal, though does not quote the citation.

Thomas's name is on the Thiepval Memorial.
