William was the son of William and Catherine A. Charnley of 295, Wargrave Road, Newton-le-Willows. He was killed at the Action at Bellewaarde, when several local men in the 4th Battalion South Lancashire Regiment also fell.
It has been possible to obtain copies of William's "burnt records" from the Public Record Office and a full profile is in preparation.
