The Battle of Scarpe

28th August 1918

The 172nd Brigade, which led the advance of the 57th Division, was given as first objective a trench about five or six hundred yards short of the Bullecourt-Hendecourt road. It advanced under a barrage fired by six brigades of field artillery, whilst two brigades of heavy artillery shelled the objective. This was taken after considerable opposition by the 1/9th King's and 2/4th South Lancashire; parties of both battalions then penetrated into Hendecourt, where they found the troops of the 56th Division which had gone astray, and later withdrew with them to the first objective, which became the limit of the day's advance.
