In Memory of

Rifleman Joseph Denning

241872
1st/5th Battalion South Lancashire Regiment
Died 29th April 1918 Age 37

Joseph was the son of Michael and Jane Denning of 18, Mercer Street, Newton-le-Willows. His obituary refers to "one of her sons" which suggests Joseph had at least one brother. He had worked at the Vulcan Foundry.

His death occurred at the 2/15th Wessex Field Ambulance, France, from acute bronchitis. It is possible that Joseph was one of the early victims of the Flu Pandemic of 1918. He is buried in Houchin British Cemetery in Plot I, Row E, Grave 32. Houchin is a village about five kilometres south of Bethune. The cemetery was opened in March 1918 and used by the 55th (West Lancashire) Division.

The NEG of October 4th 1918 reports the "pluck" of Lance-Corporal Jack Denning who had worked at McCorquodale's Print Works, and who was in a Leeds hospital with numerous shrapnel wounds. It is not possible to say if the two were related.
