Newton and Earlestown Guardian

7th May 1915

Patriotic Vulcan Lads

We publish herewith an interesting photograph of Mrs. Burns, of Wargrave Road, Earlestown, and her four sons who are serving King and Country. Before enlisting all the four sons worked at the Vulcan.
Private Tom Burns, who is only eighteen years of age, and whose photo appears at the top left hand corner, is attached to the 2nd/4th South Lancashires at Sevenoaks. He has been attached to the Territorials for four years.
Sapper Peter Burns (top right hand corner), of the Royal Engineers, is 26 years of age and is in France. He has been in the Territorials six years, and is a teetotaller and a non-smoker.
Private James Burns (at bottom left hand corner), of the Royal Engineers, Staff Riding, who is 23 years of age, is also a teetotaller and non-smoker. He is stationed with his regiment at Wendover, Bucks., and has served with the Territorial Force for 5 years.
Private Arthur Burns (at the bottom right hand corner) is 20 years of age, and is attached to the Flying Corps and has been wounded by shrapnel. He is suffering from heart poisoning through the gas fumes, and is at present stationed at Farnborough. He has served five years with the Territorials.

James, along with Tom, survived the war so are not on any memorials. He was with the signalling section of the Royal Engineers, and before the war was a core maker at the Vulcan.

The Warrington Guardian of 14th July 1917 quoted a letter from James to his parents:

"You will be surprised to hear that I've been awarded a Military Medal for good work during the last 'scrap'."
